IPL spot-fixing: UP cricketers under scanner
Description
India News: The ongoing investigations in the IPL spot-fixing scandal is set to reveal more names, with all cricketers from Uttar Pradesh coming under investigators' radar.
According to sources, investigative agencies, including the Delhi Police and Mumbai Police Crime Branch along with UP Police are keeping a close vigil on all the ten UP cricketers who represented different franchisees in the just concluded league.
The players under dock include Chennai Super Kings' star batsman Suresh Raina, Pune Warriors' Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Royal Challengers Bangalore's Rudra Pratap Singh.
Besides these three, Ali Murtaza, Eklavya Dwivedi (both Pune Warriors), Praveen Kumar, Piyush Chawla (both from Kings XI Punjab), Imtiaz Ahmed and Ankit Singh Rajput (both CSK) also turned up in the cash-rich league.
Speaking to reporters, UP Police ADG (law and order) Arun Kumar confirmed the development.
"We are working independently on the leads provided by our agencies, and so far we have successfully busted gangs involved in betting in Varanasi, Meerut, Kanpur and Ghaziabad. It's true we are continuing our investigations and several people involved in the racket are on our radar," Kumar said.
He, however, refused to share details of the probe, adding that more arrests are likely.
Meanwhile, a Special Task Force (STF) official revealed that other than cricketers, activities of coaches and local sponsors are also under scanner.
"We have been tipped about the possible involvement of some of the players and coaches from state," the official added.
