Does the iPhone 6 Plus bend under pressure?
There’s a new scandal rocking Apple. Some call it bendgate, others bananagate. Is the iPhone 6 Plus too easy to bend?

The iPhone 6 is very thin, but is it too thin? That’s what some upset users are saying after they turned their iPhones into bananaphones.

Two posters on MacRumors.com have uploaded pictures showing their iPhone 6 Plus phones bent out of shape, similar photos have appeared on other Apple sites, and a YouTube video posted by Unbox Therapy shows an iPhone 6 Plus being bent in real time.

Should you worry?

iPhones certainly aren’t immune to the laws of physics, and if you apply force to a fairly soft, thin material – and the aluminium used in iPhone 6 Plus phones is both soft and thin – then you can change its shape.

The bigger the device the easier that becomes, and that means the iPhone 6 Plus is the most bendy iPhone that Apple has ever made.

That said, you still need to use quite a lot of force. We’re not talking Uri Geller-style spoon bending here: the Unbox Therapy video clearly uses quite a lot of force to bend the phone, and we’re quite sure that the same amount of force applied to many other phones would damage them too.

If anything the damage might be worse, as rival devices are often made from plastic. That’s more brittle, less bendable and more likely to crack than the metal case of the iPhone 6 Plus.

This isn’t new. You can bend an iPhone 5 or iPhone 5S if you try hard enough, and plenty of smartphone owners are well aware that sticking a phone of any size in your back pocket and sitting on it can do serious damage to its screen or shape.

The ‘scandal’ does look like a storm in a teacup, but if you’ve bought or are considering an iPhone 6 Plus then you might want to consider investing in a strong case too.

Or you could just make sure you don’t sit on it.
