Into the micro world - a first look

By simply putting a lens on a camera backwards, best done with a reverse ring, you can get some first looks into the micro world. The human eye can resolve details down to about 50 micrometers. With the 14-42mm kit lens I have and a reverse ring, I can resolve details as fine as 1 1/3 micrometers per pixel though objects that are 500 nanometers across can still be picked up. No human eye can do that! At my camera's full resolution, it's effectively 8500 dpi to as high as 19,000 dpi. By dpi, I mean that's how many pixels in the image make up one inch in the real world when in complete focus. Due to recording at 1920x1080 instead, that drops to 3500 and 8000 dpi respectively. By definition, to be considered macro, I would need to get 6752.5 dpi, the pixel density of the camera's sensor. When I got the reversing ring, I was only expecting about 5000 dpi, but 19,000 is really high! The biggest problem spot with macrophotography is depth of field. A very small aperture is needed for the best results. This video used f/13 for the aperture.
