Inter-Korean projects all but over as confrontation returns
1 Views • Jun 17, 2020
Description
Two major inter-Korean cooperation projects the Gaeseong Industrial Complex and South Korean tours to the North's Mount Geumgang are fading into history.
And with North Korea saying it's going to revive its guard posts at the DMZ, it seems progress in inter-Korean relations will likely be undone.
Oh Jung-hee reports.
Confrontation is back on the Korean Peninsula despite a series of historic summits two years ago,... and key inter-Korean cooperation projects, the Gaeseong Industrial Complex and South Korean tours to the North's Mount Geumgang, are now virtually off the table with the North deciding to redeploy troops there.
The Gaeseong Industrial Complex has been a symbol of inter-Korean economic cooperation.
Built after the first-ever inter-Korean summit in 2000, the complex aimed to combine South Korea's capital and technology with North Korea's land and labor.
South Korean tours to Mount Geumgang, on the northern side of the border, started in 1998.
The two projects have been halted since 2016 and 2008 respectively, but now it seems they could fade into history completely... due to the presence of the North Korean military.
It's also possible that the North will remove South Korean facilities there like factories, hotels and stores.
On top of that, North Korea says it will re-install the guard posts at the demilitarized zone that it got rid of as part of the comprehensive military agreement in 2018.
Overall, inter-Korean relations are back to square one back to the way things were even before they held their first-ever summit in 2000... and the circumstances are more difficult to deal with.
The South Korean public are losing trust they may have had in the North Korean regime,... and Pyeongyang's nuclear and missile capabilities are more developed than ever.
