The ruling of a U.S. court to drop all charges against Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade is being welcomed by New Delhi.

Her arrest, strip-search and indictment on charges of visa fraud and making false statements triggered a row between the two nations.

India's foreign ministry is giving a cautious welcome to the U.S. court's ruling that she had diplomatic immunity at the time.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) SYED AKBARUDDIN, SPOKESPERSON FOR INDIA'S FOREIGN MINISTRY, SAYING:

"We have noted that the verdict pertains to the indictment of 9 January 2014. This is good as far as it goes. We have asked our lawyers to examine it very carefully and understand all the details and then advise us."

The note of caution is there because it's not yet clear if U.S. prosecutors could seek a fresh indictment.
