Iftar for refugees in Pakistan

This is now home to this Pakistani school teacher and his family.

He fled North Waziristan when the Pakistani army ordered all residents to clear out before launching an offensive to expel Taliban militants from the troubled region.

(SOUNDBITE) (Urdu) SCHOOL TEACHER WHO HAS FLED FROM WAZIRISTAN WITH HIS FAMILY, ROSHAN JAN, SAYING:

"We just managed to save our lives; everything else was left behind in our houses. Here we have nothing to eat or to live on. We are in great distress. Some of the small children have fallen ill. The women are also suffering greatly."

But there is relief in Bannu. Local residents are providing Iftar meals for the displaced observing Ramadan.

Pakistan announced the start of a full-on military offensive in mid-June to target some of the country's most feared al Qaeda-linked militants.

Air strikes are launched daily but a full-scale ground offensive has yet to start.
