Hybrid Work Stalls Office Return
Description
The return to pre-pandemic office occupancy rates has stalled as companies adopt hybrid work strategies that show no signs of fading. Approximately 58% of companies now allow employees to work remotely for part of the week, while the number of companies requiring full-time office presence has decreased to 42%. The average number of office days for employees with hybrid work arrangements is 2.5 days per week, and as unemployment remains low, employees will have the leverage to maintain these policies. The trend is causing frustration in cities experiencing declining real estate values, and some city officials are experimenting with policies, such as tax incentives for office-building owners to upgrade buildings. Office usage rates have generally remained around 50% of pre-pandemic levels, indicating a stalled recovery.
