How to check Voltage on Volt Meter
To check the voltage using a voltmeter (also known as a multimeter), follow these steps:
1. Set the Voltmeter to the Correct Setting
DC Voltage (V with a straight line and dashed line): For checking the voltage of batteries, DC power supplies, or circuits powered by DC (Direct Current).
AC Voltage (V with a tilde ~): For checking the voltage in AC (Alternating Current) circuits, such as home outlets.
Turn the dial on the voltmeter to the appropriate setting.
2. Connect the Probes
Black Probe (Negative/COM): Insert the black probe into the COM port (common).
Red Probe (Positive): Insert the red probe into the port labeled VΩma (voltage, resistance, and current measurement).
3. Measure the Voltage
For DC Voltage: Place the black (negative) probe on the ground or negative terminal of the circuit, and the red (positive) probe on the positive terminal or side of the circuit you&
#039;re testing.
For AC Voltage: Similarly, place the black probe on one side of the outlet or circuit, and the red probe on the other side. For a wall outlet, you’ll place one probe on each of the two slots.
4. Read the Measurement
The meter will display the voltage value on the screen. If you&
#039;re testing a DC circuit, it will show the voltage as a positive or negative value depending on the polarity. For AC circuits, it will show the RMS (Root Mean Square) voltage, typically the effective value.
5. Turn Off the Multimeter
After measuring, always turn off the voltmeter to save battery life.
