How safe are journalists in India?

The shutdown of Mexican newspaper "Norte" triggered by increasing violence against journalists is yet another proof of high price paid by journalist to report truth.In Mexico, one in five journalists were victim of this violence. According to a CPJ report,in the past 25 years,1234 journalists died across the world and it does not include the unreported cases.India is no exception to this dirty phenomenon.In fact, India ranks ninth in list of twenty most deadliest countries for journalists.9 journalists have died in the last 4 years and many face death threats on a regular basis.Political correspondents exposing corruption pay the highest price.
India slipped three places in the 2017 world press freedom rankings to 136th among 180 countries.With Press Freedom Day to be celebrated next month, let us revisit some of these cases and analyse the current state of journalism in the country?
