How goal-line technology works

After years of controversey and months of meetings, football's lawmakers have approved the use of goal-line technology in hopes of reducing human error in decision-making.

The English-made Hawkeye technology will rely on six cameras around the stadium to  pinpoint the position of the ball.

GoalRef, developed jointly in Denmark and Germany, uses a sensor implanted inside the ball - which is detected by a magnetic field on the goal line.

There will also be an option to forego technology altogether, and instead have extra officials behind the goal.
