Horsefly bite symptoms

Horseflies are called many different things, including deer flies, clags, gadflies or breeze flies. These insects are known for attacking animals, including humans, in order to feed on their blood. This is particularly important for female horseflies, which must ingest a protein based blood meal before they are able to reproduce. Horseflies can also transmit parasites and diseases to their victims.

Horseflies use their long mandibles to tear open the skin of an animal, which allows them easier access to blood. This kind of bite is also more painful, which causes victims to focus on the wound rather than the fly. This allows the fly time to get away.

A horsefly bite can cause pain and infection, which may result in pus oozing from the wound. Bites can also allergic reactions. If severe enough, such allergic reactions can be life threatening.
