Horror Stories: Roosters & Roadblocks

The middle stretch of the Quiet Spine. Where the forest gives up and the mud takes over.

The road is not maintained. It doesn’t need to be. The barricade maintains it. Logs chained together, blocking the way south. The chains are rusted but never break. The logs are wet but never rot.

Seventeen roosters perch on top. They don’t sleep. They don’t eat. They don’t crow. They watch the road and wait for headlights. When a truck approaches, they open their beaks in perfect silence. No sound comes out. The driver hears it anyway.

The sign is nailed to the center log. The letters are wrong. Always one letter off, and it changes when you aren’t looking. DTRUA. DETOU. DEOTUR. It means detour. It means stay. It means turn back.

The scheme is simple. The Road doesn’t stop you. It redirects you. Every detour leads to the Mill. Every shortcut adds miles.

You don’t go around the barricade. The barricade goes around you.
