Horror Stories: Loots & Grinders

The Mill. South end of the Quiet Spine.

Sacks arrive on the workbench. No one brings them. They are just there, tied with string that used to be shoelaces or hair ribbon or a hospital band. Each one is heavy. None of them hold grain.

The grinders are not metal. They are not stone. They are dense spaces in the air that hum. Feed them a thing and you get a smaller, truer version back. A wedding ring becomes a lead pellet. A promise becomes a tooth. A name becomes a weight you carry home.

The tags on the sacks are never written. The paper remembers what was owed. The Mill does not ask for payment. It collects.

The scheme: you bring loots. The grinders take what you value most. You leave lighter. Something in the Mill leaves heavier.

You don’t grind. You are ground.
