Description

In the last three weeks more than 2,000 workers have been dismissed in both the public and private sectors, causing a hike in the unemployment rate, which is now above 25%. Almost two million Hondurans don’t have a steady or well-paid job. Workers marched in Tegucigalpa to protest the dismissals and were joined by employees of the Social Security Institute who suffered an embezzlement of over US$350 million during the Porfirio Lobo administration from 2010 to 2013. They demand punishment for corrupt officials who continue to enjoy impunity today. The government has turned a blind eye to the protests. Gerardo Torres reports from Central America for teleSUR.
