HK protesters prepare for crackdown

Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters were bracing for a possible police crackdown on Sunday as their campaign entered its second week.

The protesters have agreed to allow access to government buildings next week for civil servants to get back to work.

But they're defying calls from Hong Kong's chief executive to end their protests.

Tens of thousands have spent the past week staging sit-ins across Hong Kong.

They're demanding the resignation of the city's Chief Executive and a reversal of Beijing's decision not to allow a free choice of candidates for the 2017 leadership election.

The demonstrations have been largely peaceful since police fired tear gas last weekend.

There were scuffles late on Friday with police struggling to control rival groups of pro-democracy and pro-Beijing supporters in the Mong Kok district.

Tensions were still running high in the area on Sunday as police maintained a high-profile presence.
