A sea of red and yellow fill the streets of Madrid as Spain's triumphant football team are welcomed home.

Thousands came out onto the streets to party with the players.

Spain thrashed Italy 4-0 on Sunday to retain their European Championship title.

They've become the first national side to win three major tournaments in the modern era.

SOUNDBITE: SPAIN'S MIDFIELDER, ANDRES INIESTA, SAYING (Spanish):

"I'm very proud to be a part of this legendary team because they are unique. But I am especially proud to see you happy faces in these difficult times. We are proud to see your your happiness. Long live Spain and long live Fuentealbilla (Iniesta's hometown)."

Before the parade, the players met the Spanish King and royal family.

The royals were presented with a football shirt signed by the squad.

SOUNDBITE: SPANISH KING JUAN CARLOS I, SAYING (Spanish):

"You have played well and you have known how to be good as individuals and as a team."

The victory came at a difficult time for the country, with Spain's economic woes in the headlines.

For many, the triumph was a chance to enjoy a rare night of revelry.
