Herbert Nehrlich - Weller's Logs

They carried
all the logs,
just one by one,
down to the village,
off the top of
Weller's Mountain.

There was an accident,
when one, with clumsy feet
slipped in the mud
and, instantly, the log,
now free and full of glee,
rolled down to join the others.

It stunned them all, and
with the wisdom of the ages
they heaved them once again
onto sore shoulders,
to carry all up to the top.

With loud applause and laughter,
raucous, echoing in victory,
all logs, but one by one
were nudged to start their journey
down to the valley, independently,
it was a man-made thought
which stood the test of ages.
