Tonight...
I am alone,
my thoughts
and memories
of you
sit next to me
on the old bench.

A canopy of leaves,
chestnuts,
serrated in their shape
and deep inside,
gives shade and comfort now,
but warmth comes from within,
where blood flows free
and carries some of yours,
it was a heady day
when we stood up to pledge
and plunged the needle
like two addicts into flesh,
I loved you then
and things will never change,
we are as one
and like the blacksmith's bellows
our heart shall beat
beneath the sun.
