Helen Smith - Poetry bug

Description
By the poetry bug I have never been bitten
I am as bad at it as at knitten
Unlike Marilese
Whose verse a thing of wonder truly is
In the Arabic class I came to know
This woman with the imaginative brow
She introduced me to MacGonagall
So I can laugh to be heard by all
And escape for a moment sweet
From the grey and purple appall
Of my narrow office wall
She told me of Elizabeth Klarer
Who believes her grandfather
Was a royal space farer
Boy, did Elizabeth's imagination wander!
She brought me the book of the Magic Toll Booth
My weary imagination to soothe
The story of Rhyme and Reason
And their brothers' treason
Fuelled by pride and strife
They existed only
So a boy bored and lonely
Could awaken to the wonders of life
She brought me more of Terry Pratchett
Who tears at reality with his hatchet
of words and satire
That's all the words of verse I have for today
It is the end of play
Back to the words of work
The words of crime
Words on society's grime
Written by people paid to protect and serve
Aye, but a minor civil servant I am
