The Revival of a Long Lost Art: Goryeo Buddhist Paintings
- Venerable Wol Je Lee Hye Dam
This past December, Goryeo-era Buddhist paintings took Paris by storm when they were on display at the Louvre Museum in a special exhibition. These paintings are Korean national treasures which predate even the Italian Renaissance, yet they still continue to inspire awe around the world today.
Since 1980, Venerable Wol Je Lee Hye Dam has tirelessly collected materials spread across many different countries, materials which were necessary for the revival and recreation of Goryeo Buddhist paintings. She has brought a new wave of awareness and appreciation for these paintings within Korea, dedicating nearly half of her life to the restoration of Goryeo Buddhist paintings.
This week on [Heart to Heart], we talk with Venerable Wol Je Lee Hye Dam, whose exquisitely detailed recreations of Goryeo Buddhist paintings are now making their way around the world through exhibitions in Paris, as well as in India, Tibet, Nepal, and many more to come.
