Britain's Prince Harry paid tribute to Estonia's soldiers on Friday (May 16), the first day of his trip to the Baltic nation.

The prince observed a minute's silence at Estonia's Monument of Independence in memory of soldiers who died fighting Russia.

The visit is being seen as a sign of Western support for the Baltics, where people are alarmed by Russia's actions in Ukraine.

A crowd of about 300 Estonians waved British flags to welcome Harry as he arrived at the monument in Tallinn's Old Town dressed in a military ceremonial uniform.

He later met Estonia's Prime Minister Taavi Roivas and members of the government at an official reception at the national parliament building in Tallinn's Old Town.

Harry expressed his gratitude for Estonia's contribution to the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan. Estonia has participated in the NATO mission since 2003, contributing around 150 servicemen.
