Anything was better
than this wretched midwestern existence.
No one listened or understood.

So she ventured out
and found the world to be
beautiful beyond all expectation.

But she learned
it wasn't that simple—
People were complicated.
Some were intelligent, some kind,

some compassionate and brave,
some very wicked, some deceptive.
Beautiful as it was she wanted to go home,
back to the familiar sepia tones.
