Description

Followers of voodoo make their annual pilgrimage to a Haitian temple to celebrate one of the mystic religion's holiest of days, Easter Sunday.

It's an ancient practice that first emerged among Africans brought to Haiti as slaves in the 16th Century and then fused with the Catholic beliefs of Spanish and French slave masters.

The faithful mark their devotion to their gods by sacrificing goats.

Outside the Souvenance Mystique temple, the ground is strewn with candles and offerings of food and drink.

Blood-stained worshippers dance to the sound of drumming, song and prayer, hoping to connect with deceased ancesters...and become possessed by voodoo spirits.
