The army has moved in to keep both sides apart, reportedly pushing pro- Hosni Mubarak supporters further away from the square.
Ahmed Shafiq, Egypt's new prime minister, speaking on state television says there will be an investigation in the fighting on Wednesday and the ongoing violence.
