Grenade attack on Nairobi bar wounds 13
Description
The aftermath of a grenade attack on a club in Nairobi which wounded at least 13 people.
A man asked to be let into the club in the Kenyan capital early on Monday morning, hurled a grenade, and fled the scene.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) MWAURAS BAR OWNER, CHARLES MWAURA:
"There was a lot of blood, injuries, people were screaming, others confused, generally it was chaotic. It was a chaotic situation.''
Although the small bar was crowded with customers and at least 13 people were wounded, there were no fatalities.
(SOUNDBITE) (Swahili) INJURED PATIENT, NJENGA:
"I heard a blast. Boom! Within that time, I saw a bottle containing alcohol flying towards me and hit my eye, after being hit by the bottle, I tried to control myself and went behind the bar''.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) KENYATTA NATIONAL HOSPITAL CORPORATE AFFAIRS AND COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, SIMON GITHAI:
"So far, we have received 13 patients, nine have already been treated and discharged. We are currently reviewing four patients."
The attack comes a week after Kenya launched a cross-border operation against the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militants in southern Somalia after a wave of kidnappings of foreigners on Kenyan soil.
Al Shabaab has denied responsibility for the kidnappings, saying Kenya was using them as a pretext for its military campaign.
Al Shabaab had threatened major reprisals if Kenyan troops did not withdraw, though no-one had claimed responsibility for the attack.
