'Green' 747 jumbo makes debut
Description
Plane manufacturer Boeing has unveiled its latest "environmentally friendly" passenger 747 jumbo jet.
Officials claim the 747-8 Intercontinental offers the lowest seat-mile cost of any large commercial jetliner, while being quieter and creating less carbon emissions than its predecessor, the 747-400.
Around 10,000 people gathered at the company's factory in Everett, Washington State, US, on Sunday, for the launch of the jumbo, which can seat between 400 and 500 people.
"The new 747-8 Intercontinental will set a new standard in economic and environmental performance, while providing a world-class passenger experience," said Pat Shanahan, vice president and general manager.
The plane provides 16 per cent better fuel economy, 16 per cent less carbon emissions per passenger and generates a 30 per cent smaller noise footprint than the 747-400, according to the company.
Airlines Korean Air and Lufthansa have already placed orders for the plane.
