It's stood for 3, 500 years but that didn't exclude the temple of Luxor and more particularly this tablet of Alexander the Great from the attentions of a Chinese schoolboy.

It's being restored after the 15-year-old tourist scratched his name into the tablet in Mandarin, followed by the classic phrase 'was here'.

The graffiti sparked an outcry in China when a micro-blogger wrote about it online.

Media reports said the boy and his family had been identified by internet users.

His parents were quoted as having apologised to the Egyptian people.

They also reportedly said their son had defaced the ancient monument some years earlier.

Egyptian authorities said the graffiti had been completely removed and the wall has been restored to its former glory.
