Government mulls Universal Basic Income for all Indians

After demonetisation, the government may be toying with another radical reform - Universal Basic Income. A minimum sum assured to all citizens irrespective of their employment status. Sources say the Economic Survey - which is basically the government's annual economic report card and road map will carry a chapter on this proposal. Experts say it will help minimise losses due to inefficiency in welfare schemes. But the government may not be ready for immediate implementation as it will put a huge burden on the exchequer and also dilute attempts at targeted support to the poor.
