Together since 1994 The Dixieland Crackerjacks are probably the busiest jazz band in the Netherlands. They told me they do close to 250 gigs a year. I had heard them many times on their excellent youtube site and even though I just was for a short while in the Netherlands I wanted a chance to see and meet them.
I found them in a little town near Edam where they performed in a somewhat smaller quartet setting at a wedding party. Unfortunately the stage had some windows behind the band and there was no lighting on the bandmembers so my excuses for a rather limited video quality.
Leader Bert Brandsma, an marvellous reedplayer plays here on the bass saxophone; Michael Muller is a fine trumpeter; Mrs. Brandsma, better known as “Sliding Selena “ plays some great trombone and sings a very effective vocal. To complete the group was a young and talented banjoist. The great side of this very professional quartet is their true dedication to traditional jazz without the cheap gimmicks that one so often notices by other performers.
