ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION
Police and security officials rushed Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, away from around 200 angry protesters, in Canberra on Thursday (January 26) as concerns for her safety grew.
A crowd had gathered earlier in the day to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra. The Aboriginal Tent Embassy is not an official embassy, but was set up by Aboriginal people to campaign for Aboriginal rights.
Speaking in Sydney on the country's national day, Australia Day, opposition leader, Tony Abbott, from the centre-right Liberal Party, called for the Aboriginal Tent Embassy to be disbanded. Local media said it was believed Abbott's comments triggered the scuffles.
The protesters surrounded the building Gillard was in, banging on its glass windows.
Security officials felt the situation was deteriorating and decided to move Gillard away from the protesters.
"We feel that the situation is deteriorating and can't stay. Too much danger," a security official said when he approached Gillard.
The Australian PM requested that security officials also protect Abbott.
"What about Mr Abbott? Where have we got him? We'd better help him through too, hadn't we?" she suggested.
Abbot was worried by the security threat.
"I think it would be very easy for that glass to be smashed. So, would they like us to go straight away?" he said.
"We'll just pull together," replied Gillard.
Police surrounded the pair as they rushed towards the safety of a waiting government car, using shields to keep protesters at bay.
Australian Broadcasting Corporation later reported Gillard as saying she was "fine".
