Gilgit Baltistan | Explore the Beauty

Gilgit-Baltistan covers 72,971 km² in northern Pakistan, situated where the Himalayas, Karakoram, Hindu Kush, and Pamir mountain ranges collide. It features the world's highest density of glaciers outside the polar regions and houses five of the fourteen global peaks over 8,000 m, including the second-tallest, K2 (8,611 m).
Gilgit-Baltistan shares international borders with Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor to the north, China's Xinjiang region to the northeast (connected by the Khunjerab Pass along the Karakoram Highway), and Indian-administered Kashmir/Ladakh to the southeast. It is bordered by Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to the west and Azad Kashmir to the southwest.
The territory is divided into three divisions—Gilgit, Baltistan, and Diamer—and further subdivided into ten districts. The region's topography is dominated by deep, narrow river valleys carved by the Indus River and its major tributaries, including the Gilgit, Hunza, and Shyok rivers. The famous Karakoram Highway serves as the major geographic and economic artery connecting these valleys.
Because it sits in a high-mountain desert shielded from monsoon rains by the Himalayas, precipitation is sparse. The environment ranges from lush, irrigated terraces in valleys like Hunza and Skardu (the capital of the Baltistan Division) to the vast, high-altitude Deosai Plains (at an average elevation of over 4,000 m).
