Synopsis :
À Endora, petite ville (fictive) américaine, Gilbert Grape travaille toute la journée pour nourrir sa famille et surtout Bonnie, sa mère devenue obèse après le suicide de son père 7 ans auparavant. Son frère, Arnie est handicapé mental, il est soumis à la surveillance de Gilbert mais y échappe souvent pour escalader la citerne d'eau du bourg. Un jour, Becky, une jeune femme coincée dans la ville à la suite d'une panne de voiture, se prend d'amitié pour les deux garçons...
