Giant liquid nitrogen bottle rocket 'fail'

An awesome video has emerged of two science teachers trying out a huge liquid nitrogen bottle rocket during the National Science Week in Australia.

The footage, shot on Friday at a school on the Central Coast, NSW, shows science teachers Jacob Strickling and Andrew Watt filling the 15 litre tank of their giant bottle rocket with two litres of liquid nitrogen.

Then, they set the rocket upright and the liquid nitrogen starts boiling and turns "into gas which causes the pressure to build up".

When the pressure is too high, the rubber stopper which seals the tank pops and the rocket launches.

"Unfortunately the rocket was a bit of a fail, and the cameraman has a bit of a laugh and giggle at the failure" Jacob Strickling wrote online.

"The teachers also tried water in the rocket which was pressurised using a portable air compressor. When the pressure built up high enough, the water is pushed out the bottom of the rocket, which in turn pushes the rocket up (Newtons Third Law)" he added.
