Sliding down the banister of life
one hopes the splinters will not face
the wrong way, and, when slipping up, one’s wife
will cover up each splintering disgrace.

Singing on the swings, and riding round-
abouts, one hopes one will not get too dizzy,
and when one, like a watch, gets tightly wound,
one hopes one’s wife won’t spring into a tizzy.

Inspired by Jack Golbert who wished me, as a Hanukkah or New Year greeting:

As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way.
