Sincerely he was ardent, physically he was repellent,
pursuing conquests like Columbus,
without the aid of moral compass,
he circumnavigated them, until they were Magellaned.

“If you were just prose, ” a woman named Elizabeth Waugh wrote to Edmund Wilson, “I’d be mad about you.” But he wasn’t just prose, and he certainly wasn’t poetry. He was instead a bald, pudgy little man with a drinking problem and a mean streak.
