ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

STORY: Floods submerged a major stretch of motorway connecting the German city of Munich with the Austrian city of Salzburg on Monday, as several European countries continued to experience the worst flooding in over a decade.

Authorities said part of the busy A8 motorway near the Chiemsee Lake was closed. Local residents used inflatable boats to cross the stretch or waded through the ankle-deep water.

Other areas in the southern German state of Bavaria are also hit by flooding, and local authorities have declared a state of emergency for the region.

Germany's interior minister flew to the flood-hit regions on Monday and Chancellor Angela Merkel was preparing to go on Tuesday (June 4), a government spokesman said.

The floods have also overwhelmed parts of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland.
