Description
If you have passed by George Square recently you will have seen that the perimeter hoardings are now in place - a significant start to its 18-month redevelopment. The panels on the hoardings showcase Glasgow's past and present, while displaying the future vision for both George Square and the city. Viewing spaces on the east and west sides of the hoarding will give you the opportunity to watch the development of the works progress.
This month we will see the Square's statues being removed for restoration and storage by contractor Rupert Harris, before the Square is then handed over to the public realm contractors Rainton Construction who will begin carrying out the main restoration works from the start of June.
The perimeter hoardings were put in place by specialists EVM whose other work in Glasgow has included the 2014 Commonwealth Games, COP26, and the 2023 UCI World Cycling Championships. Almost 500 metres in length and over two metres high, the hoardings extend several metres from the kerb, requiring the closure of a road lane. The taxi rank in front of the Millenium Hotel will remain in place during the construction of the Square.
George Square phasing
The work on George Square will deliver high-quality stone throughout informal 'play' areas for children in sensory gardens in the eastern areas; a raised lawn platform; new trees species will be planted to add to the existing Norway Maple and Cherry trees in the Square; new seating to add to the remembrance benches; and feature lighting.
George Square final design
Whilst the Square will be closed off during the works -the completed project, part of the wider Avenues programme, will deliver a civic space Glaswegians and Scotland can be proud. The Avenues programme is funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal, with funding provided by the Scottish and UK Governments, and Glasgow City Council.
Each Government is contributing funding of £8.815million towards the main contract for the George Square and surrounding Avenues project - to help make the city centre more attractive, greener, better connected and a great place to stay and do business.
