Repentinamente ele lê uma notícia no jornal que lhe provoca lembranças e então foge. Quando acontece um assassinato na ópera, ele é considerado o principal suspeito por Kelly (William Demarest), um detetive da polícia. Para ele o caso está fechado, mas Charlie Chan (Warner Oland) não está totalmente convencido da culpa de Gravelle e nem que ele seja realmente louco.
