Every moment,
We may say who we shall become
In the next.

Every day,
We are this and may choose
To be that.

Every instant,
We define ourselves, better or not
As we may choose.

Or else,
In that moment when we fail to choose,
Watch closely:

Our choice
Will then be handed off to fortune’s
Delegate.

And who we are
Or shall become has quickly flown
To his hands.

Allow him then
To substitute his will for yours—
Hush now, hush—

Calmly, lovingly,
A fair trade it is, just wait, and you—
May keep the change.

Will he not—
Surely he will—
With lofty benevolence,
And tender devotion,
Care for you,
Keep you warm,
Chew your food,
Sing you to sleep?

“Close your eyes now,
Sleep, sleep.
Close your eyes now,
Sleep.”
