Gamalama spews ash

Indonesia's 1, 715 meter volcano, Mount Gamalama spewed ash as high as 1,000 meters on Sunday (September 16) after it erupted a day earlier, Indonesia's national agency for disaster management said.

Officials said a second eruption caused the ash to spew and was spreading across the area.

The city of Ternate in the North Mollucas province was covered in ash. Television video showed smog on the roads due to the ash.

Indonesian authorities have said there is no need for residents to evacuate yet, although officials have said people should stay indoors.

The Department of Health is providing masks to residents in affected communities.

Indonesia has 130 active volcanoes, the highest of any country, sitting on a belt of intense seismic activity known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire".
