"Abdullah al-Senussi, the right arm of the previous regime, has been brought back to Libyan soil today from the Mauritanian capital after big efforts."
The former intelligence chief was captured in the West African nation in March - beginning a battle for his extradition between Libya, France and the International Criminal Court.
A Mauritanian government source said Libya secured his extradition after making certain guarantees - but did not clarify what guarantees.
Senussi has been accused of using his position to have attacks carried out against Gaddafi's opponents.
He also has been allegedly linked to the 1988 bombing of a U.S. passenger plane over Lockerbie, Scotland that killed 270 people.
