The anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing has become ever more poigniant since the
Fukushima disaster four years ago.

On March 11, 2011, a nuclear plant in Fukushima was extensively damaged as a result of a massive earthquake and tsunami.

It remains the worst nuclear accident since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, and prompted a public apology from plant executives.

The clean-up operation goes on today.

But residents say progress is so slow.

But the government wants nuclear power account for 20 percent of Japan’s electricity supply by 2030, despite a push for alternative sources

There were a number of anti-nuclear protests in Japan immediately after Fukushima, although the movement has since fizzled out.

But this week the country stands united as they remember the horrors of 70 years ago.
