In August 2012, three young women from the Russian band Pussy Riot were sentenced to jail terms for their so-called "punk prayer" against Vladimir Putin. It caused shockwaves across the country and abroad: NGOs denounced the sentence as political, and international stars like Madonna demanded the release of the women. One year on, the controversy has not gone away, and the case of Pussy Riot still divides Russian society.
