Florence braces for scorching heatwaves

Tourists in Florence reached for fans, umbrellas and water in an attempt to cool off on Friday (June 19) as temperatures climbed and authorities warned that the heat risk would rise over the weekend. Florence was under an orange heat alert on Friday, with a maximum perceived temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. The alert was due to rise to red on Saturday, when temperatures of up to 38 degrees were forecast. People sprayed themselves with water, applied sunscreen and sought shade while visiting the Italian city’s crowded streets, fountains and landmarks.
