Flocking to Lampedusa

Italy declares a humanitarian crisis as thousands of Tunisians land on the tiny Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, already home to 6,000 people.

Viewed as a a threat by parts of the country's centre-right government, the new arrivals thank the islanders for giving them refuge.

Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from Lampedusa on how the European Union intends to deal with the influx of migrants.
