ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)

STORY: Torrential rains and the swelling of River Ganga caused flash flooding in northern India, leaving at least 50 people missing and 11 feared dead in Uttarakhand state on Monday.

The monsoon rains came earlier than expected, hitting about two-thirds of the country.

The rainfall has been heavier than normal, but weather officials are sticking to their forecast for average rains during the entire four-month period.

The June to September monsoon is crucial for farm output and economic growth in India, where just over half of arable land is rain-fed.
