Fix for Black Screen in Oblivion (Classic Version) | Black Screen TES IV: Oblivion Tutorial Fix
Description
In this troubleshooting tutorial video, I'll show how the fix the common problem of the "black screen" in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006 classic original version, not the 2025 remastered version). This is a common problem in the original versions of Oblivion, including the 2006 initial version and also the 2009 Game of the Year Edition, all versions widely played for thousands of players due to the popularity and enduring uniqueness of Oblivion as an open world RPG.
Technically speaking, the black screen is a visual glitch caused by settings and shader configurations. Generally, this version of TES IV: Oblivion is set to use Shader Version 2, which most video cards support. However, in some cases, this can cause glitches, and in this video, it is shown how to change the Shader Version to 3, which nowadays most video cards also support, and thus prevent the black screen problem, while also enjoying the game.
00:00 Screen Effects Settings
00:36 Shaders
01:23 "Read Only" Setting
PART I - Screen Settings
1. Launch The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
2. Go to "Options"
3. In "Screen Effects", turn "HDF" OFF
(I show navigation in the video regarding where to find these settings)
4. Turn "Bloom" ON
Proceed to the next part of the video.
PART II - Shaders
1. Go to "C:\Users\rodri\Documents\My Games\Oblivion"
2. Open "RendererInfo" text file
Obs.: The "RendererInfo" text file is only generated after you go to the game's main menu at least once. (This is not the same thing as the launcher menu)
Launch Oblivion - Click "Play" - Wait for the game main menu to load - Now the text file is generated. Exit the game and proceed to editting the file.
By the way, the "Oblivion" folder inside "My Games" folder itself will generate when you simply launch Oblivion (including the launch menu), but the file itself that we actually need to edit is only generated after going to the game main menu (past the launcher menu).
3. Scroll down and read "Shader Package", pay attention to the number. It will be different for each person.
Obs.: In my example, the "Shader Package" number is 4.
4. Change the number to "19".
5. Save the file
6. Right-click the file - Click "Properties"
7. Check "READ ONLY" - Click "Apply"
