Description

Smoke billows from the peak of Mayon Volcano in the central Philippines.

On Tuesday, the volcano spewed ash and huge boulders onto a group of hikers, killing four Germans and their Filipino guide.

Twelve others were injured.

The governor of Albay province has banned hiking in the area, until the volcano is deemed safe.

(SOUNDBITE) (Filipino) ALBAY PROVINCE GOVERNOR, JOEY SALCEDA, SAYING:

"Climbing is prohibited until there is clarity between us and the vulcanology agency as to what this explosion means. They say there is no threat, but they also say there is a 6-kilometre permanent danger zone. What does that mean?"

The hydro-thermal explosion lasted more than a minute thrusting smoke clouds 500 meters above the summit.

The volcano is a popular tourist destination, where hikers camp before walking to the top.
