A clean-up operation was underway at resorts across Fiji on Wednesday (December 19) after Cyclone Evan caused widespread damage to buildings.

The biggest cyclone to hit Fiji in 20 years moved across the island late on Monday (December 17) damaging homes and resorts, the main source of income in the South Pacific nation.

Power was cut and buildings razed. Some, like the Funky Fish Resort, were flattened by the storm.

Staff at the Musket Cove Resort returned to work with the army reinforcing clean-up efforts.

Management expects the resort to be ready for tourists in about three days, the New Zealand broadcaster TV3 reported.

The Australian broadcast network ABC has reported that up to 8,000 people are still housed in evacuation centres across parts of the country.
