Amateur video out of Syria which could not be independently verified by Reuters appears to show rebels engaged in street fighting in Syria's largest city.
Activists say more than 27,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began last March. What began as mainly peaceful calls for reform has become a bloody insurgency deepening sectarian tensions in the Middle East.
More footage shows smoke rising from buildings in Deir al-Zor.
The footage comes as international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi met with President Bashar al-Assad warning the Syrian leader that the escalating conflict posed a global threat.
